Bian is a collectible design mirror formed from a single sheet of glass, shaped through gravity to create subtle, unpredictable deformations. Rather than being cut, assembled, or mechanically altered, the mirror is allowed to bend under its own weight, resulting in a continuous surface that carries within it a natural distortion.
This process gives each piece a unique topography. The gentle extrusions that emerge from the bending of the glass disrupt the uniformity of reflection, creating areas where the image stretches, compresses, or shifts. Reflection becomes fluid and unstable—no longer a fixed representation, but something that evolves with movement and perspective.
Each of these deformed areas is then carefully hand-decorated. Fine, painted interventions are applied directly onto the surface, following and emphasizing the geometry created by gravity. These gestures transform the distortions into focal points, revealing them rather than concealing them. The result is a dialogue between natural force and human intention—between what is formed and what is interpreted.
The name “Bian” derives from the Chinese concept of transformation and change. It reflects the essence of the piece: a material in transition, shifting from a flat and neutral condition into a dynamic and expressive surface. What begins as a standard mirror becomes something entirely new through a controlled yet open-ended process.
This idea of transformation is also embedded in the design approach. Minimal intervention meets expressive detail, where restraint and spontaneity coexist. The purity of the form is preserved, while subtle gestures introduce complexity—allowing the object to remain calm in presence yet rich in perception.
Visually minimal yet materially distinctive, Bian integrates seamlessly into interiors while offering a deeper layer of engagement upon closer inspection. It functions as both a mirror and a perceptual object, inviting the observer to become aware of distortion, movement, and the act of seeing itself.
Produced as a limited-edition piece, each Bian mirror is inherently unique due to the variability of the bending process and the hand-applied decoration. This individuality positions it at the intersection of collectible design and art.
Part of the V10 Gallery collection, Bian reflects an ongoing exploration into how natural forces and controlled processes can shape objects that are both functional and conceptually driven.
